Sagranòmala
Every year since 2015, we gather on Poveglia for Sagranòmala: a self-organised, non-profit celebration run by the association Poveglia per tutti.
It's a day-long open-air gathering, shared food and drink, laughter and good company on the grass from morning to evening. The island here is pure nature: clearings, trees, and grassy spaces to lie back and relax, no buildings.
Why is it called Sagranòmala?
Because the spirit is that of a community festival (sagra), but it is anomalous (anomala). Because there are no stalls, loudspeakers, stages or any of the structures and services that characterise festivals nowadays. There is no running water on Poveglia, no regular ferry service — but we'll get you there by boat.
But why bother?
The answer is simple. Poveglia has been uninhabited for decades and the State Property Agency (Demanio) would like to sell it. In opposing this unpalatable plan, which would turn the island into a luxury resort, we propose instead to turn it into a community lagoon park, open and accessible to all.
Sagranòmala is a chance to experience the impact that this park, in the middle of the lagoon, would have on each of our lives. It is also an opportunity to build a community around the future park and to reflect on the importance of having access to shared common goods, as in times gone by.
How is the day put together?
You arrive by boat in the morning and explore the island at your own pace, catching up with old friends and making new ones. Every edition features workshops, performances, talks, dancing, exhibitions, music, food and whatever else supporters feel inspired to offer.
Every edition is different, because it is shaped by the people who come together around this project.
